Environmentally Responsible

The Manildra Group is committed to effectively operating as an environmentally responsible company. As such, it has heavily invested in adding value to industrial waste products through proven scientific research. Ethanol, a by-product of the Manildra Groups wheat manufacturing, is just one of the many examples of positive steps made by the company for the environment.

The Nowra starch plant generates a water based waste stream containing soluble protein and organic nutrients. An Environmental Farm adjacent to the Nowra site has been established to manage the large volumes of liquid effluent generated by the plants  industrial operations.  Since 2004 all the solids of this stream are now processed into a high protein animal feed, Distillers Dried Grain with Solubles (DDGS). Clear clean condensate from this process goes to the Environmental Farm for sustainable irrigation to maximise the hydraulic capacity of the soils and optimise pasture growth.

Due for completion in 2009 a waste water treatment plant, consisting of an anaerobic digester BVF(Bulk Volume Fermenter) and MBR (Membrane Bio Reacter) plus a RO (Reverse Osmosis) plant which will generate methane for our boilers will enable us to recycle approximately two thirds of our effluent.   The advantage of this process is to eliminate any potential odours and it enables us to have green energy via the methane production from the BVF ie the methane will replace some natural gas consumption.

Manildra Group uses the effluent sent to the farm as a highly effective liquid biofertiliser, displacing the use of fossil fertiliser while promoting growth at the farm of over ten thousand tonnes of rye grass per year for the region's cattle and dairy industry.

Manildra Group are committed to meeting the challenge of constantly improving our production facilities to meet our environmental responsibilities.
